This test is performed to check presence of pathogenic organisms in sputum. It may be ordered in treatment of Respiratory infections.



Patient Preparation

The patient must remove dentures, rinse mouth, and gargle with water.

Only a specimen brought forth by deep cough should be expectorated into the container.

Diseases / Diagnostic Indicators

Positive culture indicates infection in lungs or the airways leading to the lungs. This is associated with diseases including Pneumonia, Bronchitis, etc.
