Kenya Medical Laboratory Tests
Thrombin time Test in Kenya
Brief DescriptionThis test is used to evaluate the activity of fibrinogen in coagulation. Thrombin is the enzyme that acts on fibrinogen in the blood resulting in the formation of fibrin threads that helps form a clot at the site of injury. Thrombin clotting time is"," therefore"," the duration of fibrin clot formation after addition of thrombin to citrated plasma.
SynonymsThrombin clotting time (TCT)
Patient PreparationThe patient should ideally not be on anticoagulation therapy at the time of testing"," but should consult with the physician before the test.
Sample TypeCitrated plasma
Sample volume1 mL
Sample collection ContainerSodium citrate tube (blue top)
Sample collection instructionsSample should be collected in a 3.2% buffered sodium citrate tube and mixed gently immediately after to ensure adequate mixing of the blood with the anticoagulant. The sample should be centrifuged for 10 minutes and 2/3 of the plasma carefully separated and kept frozen until testing.
Sample storageKeep frozen at 40c
Reference range12-19 seconds
Results Turnaround1-2 days
Diseases / Diagnostic IndicatorsInsufficient fibrinogen abnormal fibrinogen function may be indicated by a prolonged thrombin time. It can also result from illnesses including end-stage liver disease"," malnutrition"," as well as conditions that limit fibrin formation"," such as disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) and abn
